Astronomers believe that galaxies begin as small clouds of stars and dust that are swirling through space. When a cloud gets close to another one, gravity smooshes them together with a strong force and turns the two into one big mixture of spinning dust and stars. This keeps happening creating a galaxy, and it is held together by gravity!

Each galaxy is held together by gravity. Massive objects from planets to galaxies always create their own gravity, this attracts other huge things around them. The distance between each galaxy is also due to gravity. Two objects are always attracted to each other, and the more mass they have, the stronger the gravitational pull and attraction they have!
