Take a spin on The London Eye
The London Eye was built to celebrate the year 2000. It’s hard to picture London’s skyline without it. Actually, this astonishingly popular attraction boasts a mouthful of a title: the highest observation wheel in the world. It’s hardly any surprise that tourists arrive in their hordes to climb on.
Tower Bridge, is one of the London’s most famous landmarks. It has two towers, in Victorian Gothic style, that are connected with two walkways that are constructed so they can resist horizontal forces from suspended parts of the bridge. Base of each tower holds machines that lift two parts of the bridge so bridge can allow passing of river traffic beneath it. Tower Bridge is located close to the Tower of London from which it got its name.
The Natural History Museum in London is a natural history museum that exhibits a vast range of specimens from various segments of natural history. It is one of three major museums on Exhibition Road in South Kensington, the others being the Science Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. It's main frontage, however, is on Cromwell Road.
The museum is home to life and earth science specimens comprising some 80 million items within five main collections : botany, entomology, mineralogy, paleontology and zoology. Given the age of the institution, many of the collections have great historical as well as scientific value, such as specimens collected by Charles Darwin. The museum is particularly famous for its exhibition of dinosaur skeletons and ornate architecture.
Built in 1599 and destroyed by fire in 1613, the original Globe Theatre was at the heart of London’s seedy entertainment district in William Shakespeare’s time. Although the theatre was rebuilt after the fire, it was eventually torn down in 1644, and as London’s entertainment centre moved west. The modern Globe Theatre reconstruction is considered quite realistic, though contemporary safety requirements mean that it accommodates only 1400 spectators compared to the original theatre’s 3000. Whether it was to bring the audience closer to the action or just because they hadn’t invented chairs yet, back in Shakespeare’s day theatregoers would spend performances on their feet.
Madame Tussauds is a wax museum in London which was founded by wax sculptor Marie Tussaud. Madame Tussauds is a major tourist attraction in London, displaying the waxworks of famous and historic people and also popular film characters. Madame Tussauds wax museum became a major tourist attraction in London, incorporating (until 2010) the London Planetarium in its west wing and a large animated dark ride, The Spirit of London, opened in 1993. Today's wax figures at Tussauds include historical and royal figures, film stars, sports stars, and famous murderers.
Watch the tennis at Wimbledon
In late June leafy south-west London becomes the focus of the world’s greatest lawn tennis championship. Wimbledon, commonly known simply as Wimbledon, the oldest tennis tournament in the world, and is widely regarded as the most prestigious. It has been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London, since 1877 and is played on outdoor grass courts.
Wimbledon is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, the others being the Australian Open, the French Open and the US Open. The tournament is also notable for the absence of sponsor advertising around the courts. In 2009, imbledon's Centre Court was fitted with a retractable roof to lessen the loss of playing time due to rain.
