"The colour of the skin is in no way connected with strength of the mind or intellectual powers." Benjamin Banneker

Hi, my name is Benjamin Banneker. I am the first African American Scientist. Today I want to tell you all about my life and the many things i accomplished during it!
I was born in 1731 to my parents, Mary and Robert Bannaky, who were two freed slaves. I was born on a farm in Maryland.
I have always loved math and science ever since I was a little boy.

I was able to teach myself astronomy, engineering, and much more.
When I was only 22 years old I used my knowledge to create the first wooden clock in America. People came from all over to see what I had created.

In 1789, I used my knowledge and skills of astronomy to predict a solar eclipse.

Also in 1789, Andrew Ellicott, the U.S. Surveyor General, asked me to help create the design for Washington, D.C
In 1792, I started publishing almanacs. I decided that I wanted to send one to Mr. Thomas Jefferson so that he could see what african americans were capable of.
