Within these pages you will learn about slavery and enslaved Africans. Today, African Americans are free and are pivotal parts of the community in many places.

There once was a slave boy named Jimmy who lived on the Hernandez plantation.

Jimmy lived a life of hard work. He worked from dusk to dawn picking crops.

Jimmy's master's name was Julian Hernandez and the master's wife was named Isabella Ramirez. They lived in the "big house", which was built by the slaves.

The Hernandez plantation also had an overseer named Old Bob. The overseer was the person that deals with the slaves and administers punishments.

Jimmy lived with his family in a ramshackle cabin far away from the "big house". Jimmy's family consisted of his father, mother, brother and baby sister. They slept on the floor of one room and they used corn husks as mattresses.

Jimmy's family used to be bigger, but a lot of Jimmy's family was sold away at slave auctions. Slave auctions were events when slaves were treated like cattle and were checked out by potential buyers. When the buyer decided the slave he wanted the slave was ripped away from his family. Slaves were seen as objects not human beings.

Jimmy had family on another plantation and on Sundays he was allowed to see them. When Jimmy met with his family they sometimes celebrated by singing or dancing. The slaves had type of singing called "Gospel" that came from a type of singing they did in Africa and blended with Christian ideas.

Jimmy also went to church in African Christian churches. Most of those churches had began in South Carolina and Virginia. One of these churches called the First African Baptist Church was founded by Andrew Bryan, a former enslaved worker.
