To Mrs. Hockmeyer for all her teaching

Once upon a time in a magical kingdom where there were lots of people and animals. In the one part of the kingdom lived a group of elephants. One of the elephants was named Frederick.

Frederick didn’t have many friends because he couldn’t do an elephant call as well as the other elephants. He tried and he tried, but it just wasn’t good enough.

Other elephants would laugh and laugh and call him names. Poor Frederick ran home to his mommy crying, “The other elephants are making fun of me. Why can’t I do an elephant call as good as them?”

His mother held him with her trunk and began to talk to him softly.

“My dear Frederick, do not let the other kids bring you down. You’re one of a kind and your elephant call is your call only. It’s special because you are a special elephant.”

The next day Fredrick went to school and was sad. At recess an elephant named Tooley came and sat by him. She let out a call with her trunk and smiled at Frederick. “Hi, my name is Tooley. What’s wrong with you,” Tooley asked and sat down on the ground.

“My elephant call isn’t as good as yours or his or anyone’s,” Frederick pouted as Tooley listened.

“Let me hear your call,” Tooley said and she jumped with excitement. “I didn’t think my call was that good, but I learned to like it!” Tooley began to dance and blow her trunk all over the place.
