Bonjour, today we are going to be learning the difference between Direct and indirect objects. We will start with direct.

Direct Objects
Direct objects are are the nouns or pronouns receiving the action. If there is no preposition in front of the object (à) then it is a direct object because it can be replaced by a direct object pronoun.
no preposition in front of the noun =
noun is a direct object
Je vois ton enfant (I see your child)
Nous ecoutons nos méres (We listen to our mothers)
Je donne le stylo (I give the pen)
Elle à fait la pizza (She made pizza)

We listen to our mothers
Nous Ecoutons nos méres
Those would then be replaced-
Je le vois (I see him)
Nous les ecoutons (We listen to them)
Je le donne ( I give it)
Elle L'a faite (She made it)
*****When a direct object precedes a verb conjugated into a compound tense such as the passé composé, the past participle has to agree with the direct object.

We our mothers listen to
Nous les ecoutons
Indirect Objects-
Indirect objects are personal pronouns that indicate to/for whom the action of the verb is occurring.
If there is a preposition in front of the object (à) then it is an Indirect object because it can be replaced by an Indirect object pronoun.
Indirect Object Pronouns:
me - to me
te - to you
lui - to him, her
nous - to us
vous - to you
leur - to them
Direct object pronouns:
Me- me
Te- you
Nous- us
Vous- you all
Indirect vs direct object pronouns
preposition in front of the noun =
noun is a Indirect object
J'ai montré à Mon père. (I showed my dad)
Je n'ai pas parle à mes parents. (I didn't speak to my parents)
Je donne le stylo à toi. (I give the pen to you.)
Tu donnes le livre à moi. ( Give the book to me)
Pete a parlé à nous. ( Pete spoke to us)

I showed my dad
Je montré à mon père
Those would then be replaced-
Je lui ai montré ( I showed to him)
Je ne leur parle pas (I didnt speak to them)
Je te donne le stylo ( I give you the pen)
Donne-moi le livre ( Give me the book)
Pete nous à parlé (Pete speaks to us)
