"Woman must not depend upon the protection of man, but must be taught to protect herself."
Susan B. Anthony

Susan B. Anthony was born in 1820 in Adams, Massachusetts. She was born into a Quaker family and was committed to social equality.
She played an important role in the woman's suffrage movement.
During Susan B. Anthony's lifetime, all women were not treated equally. They were not able to own land, attend college, or vote in elections.
Susan B. Anthony made it her goal to fight for women's rights. She made speeches and led marches in support of women's rights.

Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton were lifelong friends and worked together to start the National Woman Suffrage Association.
They worked to change the laws that restricted women's rights. It was difficult to change the way people thought.
In 1872, Susan B. Anthony stood up for what she believed and put the laws to the test. On November 5, she voted in the 1872 presidential election even though she was legally not allowed to.

Two weeks later,
on November 18, 1872, she was arrested by a U.S. Deputy Marshal in New York.

Being arrested did not stop her fight. Susan B. Anthony continued to fight for women's rights after her arrest.
Throughout the 1870's Anthony repeatedly gave the speech, "Woman Wants Bread, Not the Ballot!" This speech was centered around the idea that the ballot was not the end goal, it was a stepping stone needed to get to the ultimate goal of economic independence.
