Discover the techniques used to pass information during the revolutionary war.

Invisible Ink
Invisible ink was a common way for British and American armies to transfer messages. The ink would consist of ferrous sulfate and water. (history.com) Messages were written in between the lines of a regular letter so that no one would be suspicious. The writing could be revealed by exposing it to heat, such as a candle flame, or a chemical called sodium carbonate.
Hidden Letters
Carrying a secret message was dangerous if you were caught. Spies found creative ways to hide letters and notes in random items. They would use buttons, hollowed out quills, or small silver balls.

Mask Letters
Innocent letters to family could contain a secret message. By placing a shaped template over the top, the reader could identify the message that was revealed. The mask and letter were delivered separately to ensure no one detected it.

Ciphers and Coded Letters
Some letters were coded and could only be read if they had the cipher. Sometimes ciphers referred to a book or were created by the writer. They would use letters, numbers and symbols to create their own cipher.
