This book is dedicated to my cousins, Flora and Elisabeth. As you grow up and meet new people, always know that you are perfect the way you are.

Delmar was an old dog whose best friend was Cassie. Cassie was only eight years old, and she had rescued Delmar on Cinco de Mayo. Everyone in her neighborhood was out in the street celebrating the holiday when she saw a dog darting in and out of the crowd of people. She ran over to him and saw that he didn’t have a collar and knew that he needed a loving home. Cassie walked the dog back to her house and named him Delmar. They had been best friends ever since.
Delmar loved Cassie more than anything, and they had just had the best weekend together. Friday night they sat outside on a blanket and watched the sun set. Saturday night they stayed up late and watched tv. But now it was time for Monday. The awful day when Cassie had to leave for school.
Delmar sat and whimpered as Cassie was taken to school. He wondered what he could possibly do in the long eight hours that Cassie was gone. He finally decided that he would go for a walk around the block. He trotted out the doggie door, into the backyard and over to the fence. Cassie always thought that there was no way Delmar could escape the yard, and even though he could leave, he always chose to stay, except for today.
Delmar leaped over the fence and began his walk around the neighborhood. The first house he approached belonged to Saber, the muscular pitbull
“Hola, Delmar! It’s such a nice day, isn’t it?” shouted Saber as he did his hourly run around the fence, his massive muscles bulging.
“Hola! Yes it sure is.” replied Delmar, trying to sound chipper.
But a certain thought kept popping up in Delmar’s head. Saber had such massive muscles, and Delmar was certainly scrawny. How he wished he could have big muscles to show off. Delmar just knew that Cassie would love him so much more if he could be big and strong. Delmar tried to forget about it and ran on to the next house, which belonged to Pancho, a lovely poodle.
“Hola, good morning!” said Pancho as she cleaned her wonderful white fur.
“Hola, yes, I suppose it is a good morning.” replied Delmar.
Delmar walked on but another thought came to his mind. Pancho had such wonderful white fur, and as Delmar looked at his fur, he noticed it was specked with gloomy grey. If only he could have spotless, beautiful fur. Despite the sadness growing inside Delmar, he trotted on. The next house was Antonio’s, the husky.
“Hola!” panted Antonio as he ran over to Delmar at the fence, his eyes sparkling in the sun.
“Buenos dias, good morning. I would love to talk but I must go on.” said Delmar as he kept on.
