Characterization
Characterization i s the process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character.

Direct Characterization tells the audience what the personality of the character is.
"The young girl was kind and noticed a lost kitten. "

Indirect Characterization shows things that reveal the personality of a character.
"The girl offered some food and warm milk to the kitten."
Through her actions, we can infer that she is kind.

There are five different methods of indirect characterization:
Speech :What does the character say? How does the character speak?
Thoughts :What is revealed through the character’s private thought s and feelings?
Effect :on others toward the character. What is revealed through the character’s effect on other people?
Actions :What does the character do? How does the character behave?
Looks : What does the character look like? How does the character dress?
This is called the STEAL method.

The young girl whispered, "Here is a blanket and a basket if you would like somewhere cozy to sleep, little kitten."
Through her speech, we can infer she is kind.

The girl thought to herself, "I wonder if he has anyone taking care of him. I better keep him safe."
Through her thoughts, we can infer she is kind.
