Conflicts with his father
Benjamin E. Mays' father, Hezekiah Mays suffered from a mental illness. He had a bad drinking problem. "When he drank too much he wanted to fight and sometimes did. All too many times we children had to hold him back from hurting Mother." said Benjamin Mays. After what happened at a young age, he vowed to never drink alcohol.
His father also had arguments with Mr. Mays about education. His father wanted him to work on the farm while Dr. Mays wanted to pursue his education.

Leaving For School
Destined to go to College, Mr. Mays' mother Louvenia helped her son by taking his place in the cotton fields, letting Mays leave his hometown of Epworth in 1911 for college at South Carolina State College in Orangeburg. Thanks to his father, he was able to pay for his train fare with a ten-dollar bill that his father Hezekiah threw at him in anger as he left. Dr. Mays would occasionally return home to his family through train.
