Chapter One: Sleepover
“Summer come downstairs!” “One-second mom!” I march down the stairs to meet my mom sitting at the dining room table. “What do you want?” “Isabel’s mom just called, do you want to have a sleepover tonight?” mom asks, “Of course!” I run back upstairs to pack. If you didn't already know, Isabel is my best friend. We do everything together, ride bikes, play video games, we even go to the same school. I throw my stuffed bunny and clean clothes into my suitcase. "What else should I take mom?" "Did you pack your toothbrush?" I look over towards my bathroom thinking, does it really matter? But just to make my mom go away I grab my toothbrush and put it in my suitcase.
"overlooking something?" mom asks me, "fine." I stomp back into my bathroom to grab my toothpaste. "happy now?" I question "with that attitude, you won't be going to Isabel's at all." mom lectures. "I'm sorry, jeez."
I grab my suitcase and walk downstairs once again. As I walk downstairs I hear the faint sound of my brother playing with his band. He has this crazy idea that it will take off in popularity and he won't have to go to college and he can drop out of high school for his senior year. Even though it's obvious that idea won't work out in the end. "shut up Peyton!" "why should I Summer?" Peyton asks, "because you sound horrible!" "Summer!" Mom yells, "I'm sorry Peyton." I still don't know why I have to apologize to my brother. I mean, he's a junior in high school and I'm just in fifth grade.
I grab hold of my suitcase and roll it down the front steps. The wheels of my suitcase end up getting stuck in the sidewalk just like the last time I had a sleepover. then my dad grabs it and throws it into the trunk. “Be careful please!” “My laptop is in there!” I run to go open my suitcase. My laptop is okay, “thank gosh”. I close the trunk and sit down in the front seat. My dad begins driving. Lucky for me Isabel’s house is only five minutes away from me.
Chapter Two: A Strange Creature
Once I get to Isabel’s house I run to the backyard. Just like always she’s sitting in her tree house waiting for me. “Summer, you have to see this”. “What is it” “It’s this weird old book I found out in the forest.” I start to study the cover, it has some sort of weird dog on it. "I think that's a picture of a dog." "Yeah," Isabel says, "Except it has red eyes..." As I study the book more I see that the cover has some sort of braille, but it’s not regular braille. Instead of having rounded little bumps, it has what appears to be white nails.
"Isabel, isn't that braille?" "I think so..." Isabel says worriedly. "We should probably go put this back into the forest, it's giving me a bad feeling." she adds "Oh come on, at least try to read it." I say "Fine" She puts her hand to the book and starts to read it. "It says the curse of the dog." "Wait," "It says one more thing," "It says how to begin the curse of the dog" She takes her hand off of the book. "Summer, I really think we should put this away.
"I think you're right" "Pick it up so we can go". As Isabel put her hand on the cover she howled with pain. “ISABEL!” she collapses onto the floor of the tree house. I shake her, but nothing happens. “Isabel, I’m going to get your mom, wait right here.” I jump out of the tree house and run faster than my legs can take me. When I get to the back of the house the door is locked. I punch and bang it with all of my might. Her mom comes running over the door towards me. "What is it, is everything okay?" "Follow me, now!" Isabel's mom comes with me and we run to the tree house.
Where did she go I wonder? "She was Just here, I swear." I turn around and see a small dog running into the forest, the thing is, it had Isabel. We open the door and run but it’s too late. Isabel’s gone Isabel's mom runs back to the house to grab her husband while I stay and look around for her. All I see is a trail of blood from where the dog started dragging Isabel away. Eventually, police officers show up at Isabel's house to question me.
Chapter Three: All My Fault
I see my dad pull up into the driveway. “What happened?” he says as we pull out of their driveway. “Isabel touched this weird book and it put her into some type of coma.” My dad is giving me this look like I’m crazy. I guess I see where he's coming from though, that is the kind of thing that would come out of a horror movie. I begin to silently cry in the car because face it, I'm the one who killed Isabel.
Then the tears start really coming. I get to that stage in crying where you can't communicate what you're talking about. As the car starts to pull into the driveway the tears go away for a second, but just a second. Then my brain goes back to thinking about how I killed my friend. As soon as the car stops moving I jump out of the door and rush to my room.
I sit on my bed and cry, I scream and cry. My best friend might be dead because of me... I killed my best friend. *knock knock* “what do you want.” “I brought you some dinner” “go away” I scream once again and flop face down onto the bed. “How could this happen to me” I turn on the t.v. to see that they are already making a story about Isabel. I turn it off in a flash. With my face still stained with tears, I wobble downstairs sick of being cooped up in my room. “Mom” “Mommy” “please” “talk to me” My mom comes over to me and hugs me. And I sit and hug her tears streaming down my face. “What should I do,” I say weakly. “I don’t know sweetie,” mom says quietly.
Chapter Four: Back To School
I wake up to find out I fell asleep in my mother's arms. "I see you have finally gotten up," "it's time for breakfast." "What..." I say, "You still have to go to school sweetie." I hop off the bed and ask my mom to leave. I slowly put on clean clothes and waddle downstairs for breakfast. I grab a doughnut and some juice and sit down on the couch. I eat my breakfast while watching the show, Teenage Mutant Hedgehogs.
My dad walks over to the couch and tells me to get in the car to go to school. Then I remember, I usually go to school with Isabel, but since I killed her that's impossible. So, the tears start going again."It's all my fault!" I whine "what is your fault?" my dad asks me "I killed Isabel" I scream. Then the car goes silent. We drive to the school and my dad drops me off. "Great," I say "Now I have to go to school with tear stains all over my face."
Mr. Kevin greets me at the door, "I heard what happened Summer." "I'm so sorry." Thank's Mr. Kevin I say sadly. I walk Over to my desk and sit in the chair, "Okay class," Mr.Kevin says, "Please take out your laptops" I Pull my laptop out of my book bag, "Today we will be researching the Us presidents." Instead of searching up presidents, I begin to research the book that summoned the dog. It shows a picture of the creature that took away Isabel, I have to close the tab though because it's too hard to look at.
Then it talks about the legend of the dog, when you read the book apparently it summons the dog. "Weird..." I say, my friend looks over her shoulder to see me looking at the pictures, "I don't think we are supposed to do that summer..." "Mr. Kevin!" Great, I think to myself, not only did I kill my best friend I have to go to the principal's office.
Chapter Five: Principal
Mr. Kevin walks up to me with a frown on his face," Summer why were you looking up disturbing images?" He takes my computer and checks the search history,"Demon dog?" "Really Summer?" He grabs my arm and walks me up to the principal's office. Why was I such an idiot I think, why couldn't I have done this with my personal laptop?
I sit down in a chair next to Matthew Wood, "Nice not to see you, Matthew." He proceeds to punch me in the shoulder, "Was that really necessary, butthead?" He just does a low growl, kinda like a mix of a bear and a cougar. Good thing for me Principal K opens the door right as Matthew punches me again I whine and grab my arm to make it look like he really hurt me. "Matthew," Principal K says sternly. "You cannot go around punching people like that."
Principal K escorts Matthew back to his classroom before ushering me into her office. "So, what did you do summer?" "I looked at disturbing images online..." I say worriedly. She grabs her phone and starts dialing my mom's phone number,"Please don't, please Principal K!" I plead, "Hello, is this Summer Anderson's mother? Principal K asks. Principal K walks out of her office.
The lady at the front office walks me back to class to grab my stuff, I got an out of school suspension. I wait at the front of the school for my mom to pick me up. When my mom comes, I get into the car and drive home. Once I get home I get on the couch and sleep.
Chapter Six:
The Dog
“Summer, wake up.” “I have a surprise for you.” I wake up to see a box about the size of my bean bag next to me on the couch. “What is it?” “Just open it up and see.” So I sit up and start pulling away at the ribbon. Inside of the box, there was a dog. It looks familiar but I can’t remember what it was from. I just realized. I scream.
“T-thanks for the dog dad” I put the lid back on the dog and rush up to my room. I slam the door shut behind me and turn the lock.I rip the lid off of the box. “Where did you take her!” “It’s all your fault!” “you.” “killed.” “her.” I push the box over and kick the dog into my closet. I slam the door shut and use a workout band to make it more secure.
