In an animal shelter far away, lives a little dog named Alex.

Alex isn't an ordinary dog. He likes to drink milk, lick his paws, and even say, "Meow."

One day, a family comes to the shelter and starts looking at Alex. His heart begins to pump like a drum. This could be his new family!

After spending a few minutes with Alex, the family decides that they like him. They are going to adopt him!

At his new house, Alex sees a ball of yarn. He rolls it around, scratches it, and even purrs at it when it doesn't move.

The family watches him play, and gets a little confused.

"Dogs don't play with yarn," the daughter says. "This dog is weird, lets take him back."

The family takes Alex back to the shelter, and leaves. Alex feels unwanted and starts to cry.

 But the next day, another family comes to the shelter. They look at the other dogs, but then the lady walks up to his cage.

"I want this one!" she exclaims.

When Alex gets to his new home, he sees so many cats! Alex plays with them all day and even eats some of their food.

"You're a cool dog," says the brown cat.

But when it is time to use the bathroom, Alex doesn't want to go outside. He goes to the litter box instead!

"Bad dog!" the woman shouts, "I am taking you back to the shelter."

Once again, Alex is back in the shelter. He slumps down and begins to cry.

Why do I have to be so different? he thinks to himself. Will I ever get adopted by a family?
