A long time ago in a beautiful country called Sierra de Las Minas, there lived a warrior named Tecun Uman who fought a long and striving battle against the Spanish conquistador Don Pedro de Alvarado. Tecun Uman was the brave fearless king of the K’iche people and the protector of Quetzaltenango the main city in the country.

Hace mucho tiempo, en un hermoso país llamado Sierra de Las Minas, vivía un guerrero llamado Tecun Uman que libró una larga y esforzada batalla contra el conquistador español Don Pedro de Alvarado. Tecun Uman fue el valiente e intrépido rey del pueblo K'iche y el protector de Quetzaltenango, la ciudad principal del país.

Don Pedro de Alvarado was the ruthless Spanish conquistador who never lost a battle.He was most known for his short temper. Before advancing to Guatemala, he was the governor of most of Central and South America in the 1500s. He would come off as a warm, nice and friendly person but that’s where he tricks you. Underneath that nice exterior he was a brutal, rash and harsh person.

Don Pedro de Alvarado fue el despiadado conquistador español que nunca perdió una batalla. Era conocido por su mal genio. Antes de avanzar a Guatemala, fue gobernador de la mayor parte de América Central y del Sur en el siglo XVI. Al principio se convertiría en una persona cálida, agradable y amigable, pero ahí es donde engañaba. Debajo de ese bonito exterior, era una persona brutal, temeraria y dura.

In the peaceful city of Quetzaltenango, Tecun Uman and the other 300 people were gathering food for the harvest.  Women could be seen weaving baskets, and children frolicking around. Warriors would be training to hunt food or defend their town from Invaders.



En la  ciudad pacífica de Quetzaltenango, Tecun Uman y las otras 300 personas estaban recolectando alimentos para la cosecha. Se veía a las mujeres tejiendo cestas y niños retozando. Los guerreros se entrenaban para cazar comida y defender su pueblo de Invasores.

While some of the K’iche people were gathered together for the harvest, The fishermen found a crashed ship on the shore. Inside that crashed ship was none other than Don Pedro. The ship was a small one that could probably fit 25 men but  suspiciously, enough it was only him. He told the K’iche people that he only wanted food and shelter, but his true intentions were that he was going to take control of the city. Don Pedro’s birthplace (Spain) wanted to take over the city for its resources.    

Mientras que algunos de los k'iche's se reunieron para la cosecha, los pescadores encontraron un barco estrellado en la orilla. Dentro de ese barco accidentado no estaba otro que Don Pedro. El barco era pequeño y probablemente podría acomodar a 25 hombres pero sospechosamente solo él ocupaba el barco. Le dijo al pueblo k'iche que solo quería comida y refugio, pero sus verdaderas intenciones eran que él tomaría el control de la ciudad. El lugar de nacimiento de Don Pedro (España). Él quería apoderarse de la ciudad por los recursos de la tierra.

Soon Don Pedro was on his way to the city of Quetz. The Spaniard Army was on their way,  he was set on a mission. Soon the city will be in my clutches, he thought as the K’iche people carried him off into their city.

Pronto Don Pedro se dirigía a la ciudad de Quetz. El ejército español estaba en camino y tenían una una misión.

“Pronto la ciudad estará en mis garras,” pensó Don Pedro mientras los k'iche’s lo llevaban a su ciudad.

The women from the tribe began to prepare a basket of food and a small hut for Don Pedro as he chatted with the tribesman. They talked about their countries and homelands. They handed him a Lanza and he headed off to hunt with the men of the K’iche people. While he was with them they taught him the ways of their fighting style. Tecun was the biggest, fastest, and bravest warrior. He always leads the other men into battles with other tribes and hunting. Don Pedro thought to himself when his men get here that  Tecun might be a problem.

Las mujeres de la tribu comenzaron a preparar una cesta de comida y una pequeña choza para don Pedro mientras conversaba con el sobre miembro de la tribu. Hablaron de sus países y patrias. Le dieron un Lanza y se dirigió a cazar con los hombres del pueblo k'iche. Mientras estuvo con ellos, le enseñaron los modos de su estilo de lucha. Tecun Uman era el guerrero más grande, más rápido y más valiente. Él siempre lleva a los otros hombres a batallas con otras tribus y cazando. Don Pedro pensó para sí mismo cuando sus hombres llegaran que Tecún podría ser un problema.

The men, Tecun, and Don Pedro all returned to the village. Don Pedro just got a message from his men that they will be here in 1 day. The K’iche people and Tecun thought nothing of Don Pedro’s men coming to get him. Only Don Pedro knew the true intentions of his men when they get here, and that is to take over the city.

Los hombres, Tecún y Don Pedro regresaron a la aldea. Don Pedro acaba de recibir un mensaje de sus hombres de que estarán aquí en 1 día. La gente de K'iche y Tecun no pensaron en los hombres de Don Pedro que iban a buscarlo. Solo Don Pedro conocía las verdaderas intenciones de sus hombres cuando llegaban, y eso era hacerse cargo de la ciudad.

As the day began to come to an end, K’iche people all went into their huts to rest. Don Pedro did the same. When everyone went to sleep the city was at a dead silence.

Cuando el día comenzó a llegar a su fin, todos los k'icheos entraron a sus chozas para descansar. Don Pedro hizo lo mismo. Cuando todos se fueron a dormir, la ciudad estaba en un silencio sepulcral.

When the morning sun was in the sky, the people of Quetzaltenango were already up preparing to start the day. Women were preparing food baskets for the men who were going hunting. Tecun gathered Don Pedro and the other men as the set off to hunt again.

  

Cuando el sol de la mañana estaba en el cielo, la gente de Quetzaltenango ya estaba preparándose para comenzar el día. Las mujeres estaban preparando cestas de comida para los hombres que iban a cazar. Tecún reunió a Don Pedro y los otros hombres para partir a cazar de nuevo.

As they were hunting, one of the men had spotted a ship in the distance. Don Pedro immediately thought this was his men coming to invade. Tecun told his men to have their defenses up because they didn’t know if the ship was friend or foe.

Mientras cazaban, uno de los hombres había divisado un barco a lo lejos. Don Pedro pensó inmediatamente que se trataba de sus hombres que venían a invadir. Tecun les dijo a sus hombres que tenían sus defensas levantadas porque no sabían si el barco era amigo o enemigo.

Tecun was concerned that a ship was coming straight for the city. He wasn’t scared but he was worried about the safety of his people. He turned to Don Pedro to ask for advice. Don Pedro said, “I don’t know what to do”. He only said this so the K’iche men wouldn’t have the upper hand. He knew that the ship was his men coming.

Tecun estaba preocupado de que un barco venía directo a la ciudad. No tenía miedo pero estaba preocupado por la seguridad de su gente. Se volvió hacia Don Pedro para pedirle consejo. Don Pedro dijo: "No sé qué hacer". Solo dijo esto para que los hombres k'iche no tuvieran la sartén por el mango. Sabía que el barco venía a sus hombres.

So as word got around that a ship was coming to the city, the K’iche went into a panic. Children were scared that the people on the ship might be invaders. Don Pedro thought nothing of the people panicking because he had a mission to complete.

Entonces, cuando se corrió la voz de que un barco venía a la ciudad, el K'iche entró en pánico. Los niños tenían miedo de que las personas en el barco pudieran ser invasores. Don Pedro no pensó en la gente en pánico porque tenía una misión que completar.

  As the panic continued Tecun gathered all the people to the center of the town. He told them to calm down because they didn’t know if the ship was friend or foe. The warriors took another look to see if the ship was any closer to the city. When they took another look the ship was gone. All the panicking came to an end, but the people didn’t know that the ship was already by the city.

A medida que el pánico continuaba, Tecun reunió a todas las personas en el centro de la ciudad. Les dijo que se calmaran porque no sabían si el barco era amigo o enemigo. Los guerreros volvieron a mirar para ver si el barco estaba más cerca de la ciudad. Cuando volvieron a mirar, el barco ya no estaba. Todo el pánico llegó a su fin, pero la gente no sabía que el barco ya estaba en la ciudad.
