For the teachers of Florida

This is a story book about the sharks of Florida. I chose the sharks because it is something that everyone in Florida knows about. This is aimed for young, first grade students. I envision that the texts relate to the mathematics through comparison of shark sizes, conversions of shark sizes, and addition and subtraction of the sizes of sharks.

My name is Finn and I’m your resident shark expert here in Florida! There are so many types of sharks that are found on the coasts of Florida, but lucky for you I know them all!

In Florida, there are twelve common types of sharks who live here year-round. That doesn’t count all of the migrating visitors! Those twelve sharks all are an important part of the ocean ecosystem.
Speaking of sharks, I think I see my good friend Anchor, he’s a bull shark! Hi Anchor!

Hey there Finn, I haven’t seen you on the Reef in a long time. How are you?
I’m great! Do you want to help me share some of the facts about bull sharks like you?
I would sure love to! I am a bull shark and I live in the shallower waters of Florida. Us bull sharks can grow to be 11 feet long and are usually gray on top with a white belly. I love to hunt with my other bull shark friends in my spare time!

Thanks for sharing, Anchor. I think you’re a great hunter! I have to go now, but I will see you next week on the Reef!
Alright Finn, see you soon!

Whew, Anchor is so awesome! I’m going to see if I can find any more friends while I’m out here on the Reef!
Is that Finn the fish I see?

That sounds like my friend Sandy! She’s a nurse shark and just the nicest shark I know!
I would love to! Well, I’m a nurse shark and I live on the floor of the ocean here in the Reef. Sometimes I like to hide under rocks so that I can have some peace and quiet. Nurse sharks can grow to be 14 feet long, but most of us only hit around seven feet long. I don’t like to move very fast, so don’t try and play tag with me!
Hey Sandy! I’m just talking about all the sharks of Florida! Want to tell me a little bit about nurse sharks like you?

That’s awesome, Sandy! Say, have you seen Hook around the Reef lately?
I just saw him a few minutes before I met you! He’s right around the rock.
Thanks so much, Sandy! I will see you later. Bye!

Hook? Are you over here?
Who’s asking?
It’s me, Finn! Finn the fish.

Well, why didn’t you say so! How are you, Finn?
I’m swell! I’m talking about all of the sharks in Florida, do you want to talk about sharks like you?

Well, sure. My name is Hook and I’m a tiger shark. They call us tiger sharks because of the stripes we have on our bodies. Usually us tiger sharks can grow to be 18 feet or longer. I have a lot of teeth, around 80 to be exact. My friends live in the Gulf of Mexico and in the Atlantic Ocean on both sides of Florida. Just like Anchor, I love to hunt with my friends. That’s all I can think of Finn, anything else?

I think that covers it! Thanks Hook.
