The reason why Chinese people celebrate Chinese New Year is because of an old legend.

A long time ago in China, there was a terrible monster called Nian . The monster lived in the mountain and ate all kinds of living things. It came out of the mountain cave to catch people and eat them.

The monster came to people's villages every 365 days after dark. When the sun began to rise, it went back to the mountain again.

People called a year - Nian. The day the monster Nian came out was called Nianguan.

People learnt how to survive. They cooked dinner very early on New Years Eve and stayed together inside their house with their doors closed.
The people prayed for good luck. After eating dinner, no one could sleep.
