Introducing Lev Vygotsky

-Born in Belorussia in 1896 (Bodrova).

-Didn't begin his work as a psychologist and educator until 1917 (Bodrova).

-Died in 1934 when he was only in his 30's (Bodrova)

-Vygotsky's work didn't reach the western world until 1970's, which is where his ideas were first valued (Cherry, 2018).

Why did I choose Vygotsky?

-Zone of Proximal Development.

I feel that If we as teachers aim more so for what the child knows, then we can effectively help build on to that knowledge. I also believe that independent learning is important, and thats a key point when it comes to the ZPD.

-The ZPD made up of the upper and lower boundary, with the middle being the place where true learning can occur (Bodrova, 2001).

- Subject too easy? This will result in boredom.

-Subject too difficult? This will result in the students becoming distressed.

-Vygotsky believes teachers need to

aim their teachings between

the two boundaries (McLeod, 2014).

Social Development Theory

-Vygotsky believed that children learn from their environments.

-This leads us into the theory, which is that a child's growth is based on their complex social surroundings and the interactions that take place between them (Bodrova).

-Meaning that a child that is interacting socially with someone who is to be considered skillful in a particular subject will help the child learn better.
