Each year on Valentine's Day at Middlebury 

Elementary School, all of the kids in Ms. 

Star's first grade class had a huge party. 

There were lots of red and pink decorations 

and delicious heart shaped cookies.

All of the kids were running around, 

laughing and playing, and handing out 

valentines. But Logan wasn't joining in 

the party.

He was sitting at his desk alone. Logan 

was very sad because while the other 

kids had all gotten lots of valentines, he 

had gotten none. 

Logan didn’t have many friends because 

he was very shy and didn’t like to talk 

to the other kids. He wanted to talk to 

them, but he didn’t know what to say. 

He felt like a turtle, hiding in his shell.

Logan looked over towards the middle 

of the classroom and saw all of his 

classmates standing around Rose, the 

cutest girl in the whole class. Of course, 

Rose had a giant pile of valentines on 

her desk. 

Why couldn’t he be more like Rose? She 

was never shy, and everyone wanted to be 

her friend. Rose looked around, trying to 

find the plate of cookies. She noticed 

Logan, sitting alone at his desk. He looked 

so sad and lonely. She felt so bad for him. 

She went over to her desk and got out 

some paper and markers. She knew just 

how to cheer Logan up.
