What is Autism?
Autism is a developmental disability caused by a problem in the brain. The cause of autism is still unknown to scientists and doctors. Some of us are just born to be different than others!

There are 3 types of Autism:
Autistic Disorder
Asperger Syndrome
Pervasive Development Disorder
All Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are characterized by social-interaction difficulties, communication challenges, and the engagement in repetitive behaviors.
The difference between each spectrum depends on the severity and the actual symptoms. Let's learn more about the 3 different kinds!
Autistic Disorder
When people think of autism, this is usually the type they think of. Children with autistic disorder have social-interaction difficulties, as well as communication challenges. They tend to engage in repetitive behaviors like repeating sounds or hand-flapping. Those with autistic disorder have trouble regulating their emotions, often resulting in a crying outburst or something similar. They also often have a delay in language or difficulty holding a conversation when they are old enough to do so.

There are often other medical conditions that accompany autism.
Here is a small graph showing a few:

Asperger Syndrome
Children with Asperger Syndrome find it difficult to express their feelings and to connect with others. They also find it challenging to read another individual's body language, such as hand gestures and facial expressions. They sometimes flap their hands just like children with Autistic Disorder. They are usually obsessed with one specific subject and become an expert in it! They are just like other children, but just have difficulty with social connection.
