ONCE UPON A TIME there lived a family of light
bulbs known as the “Bulbers”. The Bulbers all
combined their powers to light a famous
chandelier known as The Chandelier. Until a
special day, the Chandelier was lit only by
“Bulbers”. The Bulbers were normal light bulbs,
but after the eldest Bulber finally retired, the
chandelier needed a replacement. After several
years of using the same Bulber bulbs, the
members of The Chandelier expected the same
type of replacement.

The Bulber family was dead wrong.
When the they woke up the next night, they were shocked to
find a new light bulb they had never seen before.
“Who is that bulb?!” asked Bobby Bulb, a one-year-old
member of the Bulber family.
“Yeah, he’s kind of weird-looking...,” cried Johnny Bulber.
“Hi, I’m Twirly Tom Glower!” said the bright new bulb. In
fact, Twirly Tom burned brighter than anyone in the Bulber
family.
“No one cares!” barked the dimmer Bobby Bulb.
And all the other bulbs started to call him names.

Finally Twirly Tom began to
become dimmer and dimmer
until he almost seemed off.

Twirly Tom’s voice quickly faded. “Oh... sorry
guys...” He was about to turn off when a bright
green bulb came forward.
“It’s nice to meet you Twirly! Don’t worry
about the other lights bulbs. They just don’t like
how you burn brighter than them.”
Twirly Tom flickered back on. “Oh, thanks mister!
What’s your name?”
“My name is Green Gus. The Bulbers made
fun of me when I first came here, but I finally
showed them my strengths.”

“But... I don’t have any strengths! I flicker when I
turn on, and I’m shaped differently than everyone else!”
Twirly Tom began flickering again.
“Don’t be silly! You burn so much brighter than the
other bulbs! You waste less energy than the other! And
it’s great that you’re shaped differently! The other bulbs
are in the shape that works best for them, and you're in
the shape that works for you!”

While Twirly Tom thought about this new idea, Green Gus turned to the Bulber
family:
“Bulbers, all of you have your own strengths and weaknesses: you guys
might burn dimmer than Twirly Tom, but you can turn on instantly and you know
how to use dimmer switches. Twirly Tom, on the other hand, burns brighter than
you, but he flickers and he doesn’t know how to use dimmer switches. Everyone is
different, but no one is better.”
Silence fell upon the Bulber family while they thought about these new ideas.
Johnny Bulber was to first to speak up:
“He’s right, guys. We shouldn’t be making fun of Twirly Tom! After all, we’re
the dim ones.”
After everyone had a good laugh, they turned towards Tom.
“We’re sorry that we made fun of you, Twirly. Maybe we can take you to
dimmer class tomorrow!”
Really?! I’ve always wanted to learn how to use a dimmer! I guess I could
take you guys to efficiency class, and we could all learn new things!”

The next night, when
a man walked into
the chandelier-lit
room, he found that
the room was flooded
in light. It didn’t
matter which light
bulb was producing
more light, or which
one flickered more.
What mattered was
that all of the light-
bulbs worked
together to light his
room, and that they
all worked as a team.
