The sun was shining, the birds were singing, and the 5th grade students wanted nothing more than to play with their fidget spinners!
It all started one fine day at the Arbor Intermediate School.

For the past week, every student in Ms. Sernotti's class had been bringing in their fidget spinners. At first, she did not mind the students playing with them as she taught. But then, little by little, they turned into a distraction. Finally, she called upon Principal Baldassano for help!
Fidget Spinners are now fully banned from Arbor!

Upon hearing this terrible news, Sally and Billy ran to the school library. Billy did not want to part with his favorite fidget spinner, so he began to cry!
Don't worry, Billy! I have an idea.

Sally explained that Principal Baldassano said fidget spinners were to be banned in full from Arbor. But, he never said that they weren't allowed in parts!
Quickly, Sally broke her fidget spinner into four parts, and threw away three pieces so that she only had 1/4 of a spinner. Billy broke his spinner into three parts and threw away two pieces so that he only had 1/3 of a spinner.

Billy and Sally returned to class with their fractions of fidget spinners. When Principal Baldassano started to confiscate them, Sally explained that they were not full spinners, only pieces of a spinner and for that reason, they should be allowed to bring them to class.

Principal Baldassano, seeing that Sally had in fact made a very clever point, decided to allow the students' pieces to be brought into class, but on one condition.
You may only bring in your fidget spinner pieces if they equal less than one whole fidget spinner!

Sally and Billy need your help!
What do Sally's 1/4 and Billy's 1/3 fidget spinners equal all together? Will they be allowed to bring it into class?
