Hanami, or cherry blossom festivals, are yearly celebrations that take place in Japan to honor the profound beauty of nature.

Hanami celebrations revolve around the blooming sakura, or cherry blossoms, and usually take place between the months of March and May.

The celebrations begin early in the day and last well into the night. Tea ceremonies, songs, dances, and traditional kimono are worn as people gather to enjoy the blossoms.

These festivals are so popular, that many are portrayed in mainstream media such as anime, or animations, and manga, comics.

Though the traditional drink of hanami is sake, or rice wine, many people choose to drink a special tea made from dried sakura petals that have been blended with green tea. This mixture is then brewed in a kyusu, teapot, and then served using teaware decorated with sakura.

Wagashi, a seasonal Japanese sweet usually paired with tea, are traditionally part of the individual ceremonies. There are many different types, but most all are made from plant-based ingredients.

Though there are many different definitions of beauty, this time-honored tradition is truly a sight to behold!
