How do/did you water it?

Way up in the sky far above the trees, there is a cloud named Chaz. He spends his days overlooking the town of Summerville. He especially likes the days he drifts by the community garden.

The garden is planted and taken care of by all the children in the community. The children are in charge of tilling the dirt, planting the seeds, and making sure the garden is watered. They water the garden so it can thrive and grow plenty of fruits and vegetables for every family in Summerville.

The biggest task the children have taking care of their garden, is to keep the garden watered. The children have no access to water near the community garden, so it is Chaz the clouds job to make sure it rains! When Chaz the cloud is not around to make it rain, the children have water saved up in their rain barrel to water their garden.

A rain barrel is a large tub that collects rainwater as it falls. The water is then stored in the tub, so it can be used when the children need it. There is a screen on top of the tub that keeps bugs, leaves, or any unnecessary debris from getting into the water! When the children are ready to water their garden, they use the faucet on the rain barrel to get the water out.

Chaz especially likes the rain barrel, because he knows he plays a huge role in making sure that it is full so the children have water when they need it most. They can use the water for their garden from the barrel when it doesn't rain. They do this so they don't have to use water from their houses. It saves money, and it is a great way to help keep the water clean from any chemicals that get into the ground!

Chaz likes to see all the wonderful ways that the children can use the water that he fills the rain barrel with. The children can take the water that is collected in the rain barrel and use it to water their plants, wash their bikes, water their pets, and rinse their hands after taking care of their garden.

One day Chaz notices that the rain barrel is very empty and dry. The children are sad, because their plants are starting to wilt and die.
