Our Amazing Eyeballs (Sight)

Do you know how we see? Light enters our eyes through a black spot in the middle which is really a hole called the pupil. It changes sizes with the help of the colored part around it, the iris.  By opening and closing the pupil, the iris can control the amount of light that enters the eye.

Once the light is in our eye it passes through the retina at the back of the eye. The retina turns the light into waves that our brain can understand. It uses light sensitive cells called rods and cones to see.

Rods help us to see when it's dark. Cones help us to see color. Our eyes have a lens to help them focus. The brain sends responses to the muscles around the lens to tell it how to focus the light. Then we are able to see the beauty around us.

Our Wonderful Ears (Hearing)

Hearing is how we recognize sound. It's how our ears take sound waves and turn them into something our brain can understand. The 3 major parts of the ear are the outer, middle, and inner ear.

The outer ear has the auricle (the ear), the ear canal, and the eardrum. The auricle helps to gather sound and vibrations so we can hear more sounds. The ear canal takes the sound deep into the ear. The eardrum is a thin sheet that vibrates when the sound hits it.
