Plot
Mole was at home doing spring cleaning. When he got bored, he ran to the surface, on the road, and through the meadows to get to the river.(Grahame 1-23)

At the river, he met Rat. The two became great friends. That friendship brought Rat’s friends Badger, Otter, and Toad into the story. (Grahame 47-106)

The story continues with them going on different adventures. Some did not end well. Toad, a heir, was very interested in motorcars. He stole a car and was arrested and sentenced to jail. (Grahame 112-150)
He escapes from jail disguised as a washerwoman. The other animals then had to deal with the bad reputations they had for being Toad's friend. (Grahame 153-200)
Toad’s home was taken over by animals from the Wild Woods and the four friends worked together to save the house. They drove the Wild Wooders away. (Grahame 153-200)




Toad changed and became a respectable nobleman. He was loved and admired by many. He deepened his friendship with Mole, Rat, and Badger. The four often take long walks and now live happily ever after. (Grahame 200-253)
