The Princess and The Pie
Written by Hannah Tristan
This book is a fictional story regarding Type 2 Diabetes, intended for children ages 7-10. I was inspired to choose this disorder as my own mother is a diabetic patient, and my little sisters have trouble comprehending what it really is. This story portrays the causes and symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes in a simple and entertaining way that children, like my little sisters, can understand.

Once upon a time, there lived a princess. Her most favorite thing to eat in the whole wide world was pie. She would eat it everyday for every meal, and would never get sick of it.

Wherever she went, she would bring pie with her to eat as a snack. She never thought about how unhealthy it was - it was just too good to resist! Her brothers and sisters had tried to tell her, but she never listened.

That pie isn't good for you!

Then one day, as she was eating her fourth slice of pie, she suddenly felt dizzy and very tired. Her vision became blurry, and she started seeing stars! "Help!" she called. "I don't feel so good!"

The doctor came over right away, and ran some tests on the princess. "You have Type 2 Diabetes," he told her. "But don't worry, it can be easily taken care of by eating healthy foods and exercising everyday."

The princess decided to search the Internet for information about Type 2 Diabetes. She found an article and read all about the causes and effects of her illness.

She was astonished at what she was reading. Her brothers and sisters had been right! Too much pie really was bad for her.
Oh my goodness!

Type 2 Diabetes is caused by too much sugar in the blood. This is because a diabetic patient's body cannot use insulin, a chemical produced by the body to take in sugar. The sugar then builds up over time, and blocks blood from giving oxygen to parts of the body. If left untreated, parts of the body may stop working properly, because they do not have enough oxygen.
The princess read about all the different body systems that diabetes affects. First, there was the circulatory system.

The circulatory system is the movement of blood to move things around the body. Too much sugar in the blood makes it hard for oxygen to move through, and it cannot get to where it needs to be.

That's why I was dizzy! The oxygen couldn't get to my brain!
Then, there was the nervous system.

The nervous system gives signals from the brain to the body. When the nerves do not getting enough oxygen from the blood, they cannot send signals quickly.
The damage to the nerves can cause pain and numbness in parts of the body.

Maybe my blurry vision was because of the damaged nerves in my eyes.
Finally, there was the urinary system.

The urinary system helps to take out waste from the body, in the form of urine and stool.
Since the waste cannot be moved properly around the blood, there can be problems with going to the bathroom.

I do remember having trouble going to the bathroom.

"This is awful!" said the princess, after reading all the problems that Type 2 Diabetes could cause. "I really should have taken more care of what I ate. How do I help myself?"

The princess went to talk to the doctor again, to try and figure out what she could do to make sure her illness did not get any worse. He told her that a healthy diet, lots of exercise, and a medication that he would give her would help to take care of it.
So the princess fixed what she ate. She made sure to eat less sugary foods, and more fruits and vegetables. And most importantly, no more pies!
