This book is dedicated to all those that reside in the Rio Grande Valley and have a love for the history of where they are from.

Jose de Escandon was born in a city known by the name of Cantabria in the country of Spain in the year of 1700. At the age of 15, he moved to New Spain and joined the military.
As Escandon grew older, he became famous in the 1730s and 1740s for being a peacemaker when the indigenous people resisted to Spanish dominance and created uprisings.
Because of this, Escandon then was given the task to explore the Gulf of Mexico, known as the Seno Mexicano. He created the province of Nuevo Santander stretching from present-day Tampico, Mexico to the Nueces River in Texas.
In 1748, Escandon became the first governor and captain general of Nuevo Santander and later became known as the first colonizer to establish 15 settlements between the Rio Grande River and the Nueces River.
