Chinese New Year is also known as the Spring Festival. It is the most important celebration in the Chinese calendar. This holiday marks the end of the coldest days. It is celebrated to welcome spring.

Unlike some holidays and celebrations, Chinese New Year doesn't have a set date. It can change every year. In 2019, it will start on February 5th and last until February 19th. Chinese New Year always lasts 15 days.

Originally, the Spring Festival was created to dedicate a day to pray to gods for a good planting and harvest season.

Lots of people migrate back home for Chinese New Year. All over, families go back to their homes and meet altogether to have a New Year's Eve dinner. This migration back home is called chunyun, or Spring Migration.

During Chinese New Year, people exchange gifts, but Chinese children receive something extra special. They get a red envelope filled with money. It symbolizes transferring good fortune from the elders to the children.
