When Lily was very little, her mother went away leaving her alone with a very mean father and a loving caretaker named Rosaleen.

"I was the only one who knew, despite her sharp ways, her heart was more tender than a flower skin and she loved me beyond reason." (Kidd 11)

One day when Lily had enough of her dad she decided to run away with Rosaleen, to Tiburon, South Carolina, the place written on the back of one of her mothers photos. They hitched a ride with a man all the way to the edge of the city.
"A colored man driving a beat-up Chevy truck full of cantaloupes had mercy on us." (Kidd 50)

Upon arriving in Tiburon, Lily went into a store where she saw the same image her mother had left. She asked the storekeeper where she could find the people who made that and he led her to the Boatwright sisters house.
"I do not mean a picture of just any black Mary. I mean the identical, very same, exact one as my mother's." (Kidd 62)

When she got to the house she met August, May, and June Boatwright. The three sisters lived together in a big pink house where August was a beekeeper. They were very kind and allowed Lily and Rosaleen to stay there for a while.
"'They'll stay here,' she repeated in a way that let me know who the big sister was and who the little sister was." (Kidd 72)

Though Lily was very excited to be here, she told a little lie to August. She said that she had no parents and needed somewhere to stay, but really she was hoping to find if the sisters knew her mother. Rosaleen knew the lie and did not approve of it but she knew Lily would come clean in time.

"'It's your secret,' she said. 'You do what you want with it." (Kidd 79)

For several weeks Lily helped August with her bees and honey, she would collect it or help make sure the bees were healthy. In this time she grew to love the sisters as they did her. She was happier than she had ever been, but her lie started to eat away at her.
"August looked at the clock, announcing we'd done so good with our time we had a whole hour left before lunch." (Kidd 146)
