Hi! My name is Marguerite and I am a junior high student at Fairmont Elementary school. Mrs. Klistoff is my Science Teacher. And one day she announced to the class....

Good Morning Class! Today I have a very special challenge for you! We are going to be designing a chicken coop to build right here on our school grounds!

This is going to be like a competition. You will work in teams to draw up the design plans for the chicken coop.
There are six criteria to keep in mind as you work. And that's it! The rest is entirely up to you all!

Criteria:
- 1. Design/ dimensions
- 2. Functionality
- 3. location
- 4. Advantages
- 5. Cost
- 6. Longevity

The students got right to work.
Even when it was time for recess, they wanted to stay inside the classroom and work on their project!

Mrs. Klistoff watched with pride and amazement as her students demonstrated dynamic and productive student agency.
She observed that the special education students, as well as the students that did not normally voluntarily participate, were all diligently working together in their design groups.

Did you know chickens can lay one egg every day?

Chickens
Great idea!

Mrs. Klistoff listened to the conversations the students were having as she walked around the classroom. She was so pleased as she overheard the students contributing their own Funds of Knowledge regarding owning chickens, because it helped deepen the understanding for the other group members.

SCIENCE

If the chicken coop is this size, then we can house 12 chickens. I know that because the chicken coop at my house is this size, and my dad said that's exactly the amount of space the chickens need. My dad knows all about chickens!

The following week, the students presented their drawings to their classmates and teachers, as well as some guests that also came to observe.

All of the student groups' presentations demonstrated that the students had put a lot of effort into their project designs.
