People who inherit two genes for sickle hemoglobin, one from each parent, have sickle cell disease. With a few exceptions, a child can inherit sickle cell disease only if both parents have one gene for sickle cell hemoglobin. The most common situation in which this occurs is when each parent has one sickle cell gene.
A disorder that affects hemoglobin which consists of four protein subunits. The molecule in red blood cells that delivers oxygen to cells throughout the body. People with sickle cell have atypical hemoglobin molecules called hemoglobin S, a mutation can distort red blood cells into a semi circle shape.
A chromosome is a structure of nucleic acids and protein found in the nucleus carrying genetic information. When sickle cell occurs a mutation in chromosome 11 gets affected when the trait starts to develop.
