My name is Ivan, and I am a
scientist.
I have a problem.
It has to do with
greenhouse gases,
such as CO2. When we
have too much gas, the
earth overheats.
We have too much
gas, and the earth
is in trouble.
We can stop this problem
by using renewable energy
sources,which are energy
sources that will never
run out or cause
greenhouse gases.
One type of renewableenergy is solar power.
Solar power is energy from the sun. 
Every hour, the sun beams onto earth more than enough energy to satisfy global
energy for an entire year.
Solar panels, or
photovoltaic cells,
take the photons of
sun beams and
break away their
energy.They then
turn it into
electricity.
The first solar powered aircraft flew
across the U.S. using
only solar energy
in 1990.
This house has solar panels on its roof.This will lower their emissions of
greenhouse gases and give the
family a lower electricity bill!
This calculator has solar cells. This allows for a longer battery
life!
Solar power plants
boil water into steam
using the sun's heat
and use the steam to
drive a turbine.
Edmund Bequerel, discovered that some
materials made electricity when
exposed to the sun's light.

A problem with solar power plants is thatthey don't work on cloudy days or during
the night. This is because the sun's rays
cannot reach them.
How sad! The cloud blocked
the sun beams!
Another type of renewable
energy is Geothermal
Energy.

Geothermal energy is the main energy source in IcelandGeothermal
energy
comes from
the heat of
the inner
part of the
planet.
One way to use geothermal
energy is to collect heat from the
Earth's surface, which
stays between 50-60°F.
It makes enough energy to
heat an entire house.
