It was a cold October night in Brooklyn,
1905. Alice Goodman lay awake, trying to
process in her mind what had just happened
earlier in the day. Both of her parents had
been killed in a horrific factory fire. Now she,
fourteen-year-old Alice, had to provide for
three younger siblings besides herself.

Alice picked through a random trash can the
next morning to try and find some food.
"Nothing here but an old rotten banana," she
said. "I guess I'll have to find a job so my
family will be fed." Later that day, she went
to the bakery and was hired as a delivery
person.

Once again that night, Alice found herself
awake, thinking about how the family would
get by without their parents. Alice knew of
the difficulties ahead of her, but was willing to
carry the family through the troublesome
times. "Whatever happens, I will fight to
support my siblings," she promised herself.

Alice worked hard delivering bread all week, and the
baker was pleased with her progress.
"Good job, girl!" he exclaimed at the end of her first
week working. "I'm glad to have you here."

Alice's younger brother and two sisters were all
waiting for her as she got home from the bakery.
"Hurry, hurry, come quick! We have something
to show you," they burst out. Alice rushed inside
to see what all the fuss was about.

Sitting on the kitchen table was a stack of money!
Alice gasped in excitement. "Where did this all
come from?" she asked.
"Mom and Dad had a thing called insurance, " her
brother explained. "It gives us money since they
passed away."
