Soon after completing naval boot camp as well as the Navy School of Music, Gary was deployed into the Navy in March of 1971.

As a Naval musician, Gary would play for a variety of occasions. Including, the change of commands, Navy holidays, or any other important events.

While assigned to a ship, Gary would spend most of his time on the boat reading and rehearsing.

After years of being a successful musician for the Navy, Gary switched careers to become a counselor for the thousands of soldiers assigned to his ship. He enjoyed becoming a counselor because it meant he would be able to help many of his fellow navy members.
