Hero loved to go on walks and play with his stuffed bear, but his favorite thing was when people would come and visit him at the animal shelter.
Penny Jones and her parents had just moved from Florida to Tennessee. Penny had many friends and was very outgoing in Florida, but her parents noticed that she was having a hard time adjusting to the move.
Hero loved when people rubbed his belly and gave him treats, but he hated when they had to leave.
Her parents didn't know what to do for her; she was usually such a happy child.
Hero watched as the other dogs around him would leave their cages out the front door with people and never come back. Hero wondered where they were being taken.
One evening Penny and her parents were out walking and their neighbor was out in the yard with her dog Bandit. Bandit greeted them and Penny began to pet him. Penny smiled and giggled while playing with Bandit, this was the first time her parents had seen her this happy since they had moved.
The other dogs around Hero wagged their tails when humans approached, sitting nice and tall. He tried doing that, but he always got so excited and started jumping.
Penny's parents decided that a dog might help Penny come out of her shell.
Hero curled up in his bed with his stuffed bear and wondered if he would ever get to leave. This place was nice, there was good food, and he met new people every day. But Hero felt like he was missing something.
The next day Penny's parents asked their neighbor where she found a dog as good and sweet as Bandit.
"Oh, I found him at the local animal shelter," their neighbor told them.
The next morning Hero ate a big breakfast, and waited for new people to show up.
Penny's parents decided to take her to the animal shelter that afternoon. They picked her up from the school bus and began to drive to the animal shelter. The biggest smile came across her face as she realized where they were going.
Hero waited all day at the front of his cage to see the people who had come to visit. They fed him many treats and petted him a lot, but he was getting tired, so he decided to curl up with his stuffed bear and sleep.
