Easter is the time of year when Christians remember the death of Jesus Christ. They believe that Jesus, who is the son of God, died for everyone's sins and then came back to life three days later.
Lent is the 40 day period before Easter starts. It starts on Ash Wednesday and ends on Easter Eve. It is a time to prepare for Easter and think about your relationship with God.
The 40 days represents when Jesus was tempted by the Devil in the desert. During this time he didn't eat or drink anything. Because of this, some Christians give up some food for Lent.
Shrove Tuesday is the day before Lent starts on Ash Wednesday. Shrove is a old middle English word 'Shriven' which means to go to confession on the day before. Another name for this day is Pancake Tuesday where people use up all the fattening ingredients in there house before Lent.
Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent. It comes from the tradition of putting a small cross of ash on peoples forehead at church services. This helps people to remember that they rely on God for forgiveness from their sins.
Holy Week is a special time for Christians. In many churches, during Holy Week, special services are held on everyday up to and including Good Friday. It includes Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday .
Palm Sunday is the first Day of Holy Week. It is called Palm Sunday because the people were so happy to see Jesus and knew that he was very important, so they took branches from the Palm and Olive Trees that lined the road.
Maundy Thursday is the Thursday of Holy Week. It represents the day that the Jewish Passover was celebrated in the Bible Story of Easter. On that day, Jesus had his last meal with his friends and followers before he was killed. This meal is now know as 'The Last Supper'.
