To Harriette.

Once upon a time, a chick named Harriette lived with all her sister-chicks in the sunny barnyard.

Harriette was different than her sister-chicks. They had sleek feathers that flowed like lordly lion manes. They had striking patterns that lay like lace from head to tail. But...

Her feathers flung this way and that and flopped in her face.
She had CRAZY hair!

She could not see very well at all. And that made her frightened of just about everything.

One particularly perfect afternoon, Harriette followed closely behind her sister-chicks to the hay bales. But as her sister-chicks leaped here and there, having a grand old time in the sunshine, they disappeared!

Harriette scrambled about like a spinning top looking for them until she had to stop and catch her breath.

She looked this way and saw a gnarled mess of pointy claws and gnashing yellow teeth.

Her sister-chicks' tweety-twitters floated happily somewhere in the air around her.

She looked that way, and she saw a looming wall that reached the sky. She felt trapped!

She looked behind her and saw a looming monster with bug eyes.

All hope lost, Harriette flung around and ...

... ran SMACK into a tree.
A thick, sturdy, denim-covered tree.
