On July 3rd, 1863, the end of the Southern States Rebelion was shown to come near do to the defeat off General Robert Lee in Gettyburgs by the hands of Ulysses S. Grant. Afterwards, President Lincoln announced both Emancipation of Slaves and call for reconstruction between Southern and Northern States. This began the Era of Reconstruction, which would start major changes for African Americans, given rights, and how racist thought about white sheets and flaming cross.
In the start of the Reconstruction, our boy Abraham Lincoln got shot by an actor by the name John Wilks Booth, a.k.a guy who wanted to "blow" the Presidents Mind with his proformance. After that his vice president, Andrew Johnson, took up the position of president. The 13th Amendment was also passed as law, which made slavery illegal in America. This displayed how some weren't to kind to the idea of a reunited American.
One thing to remember about President Johnson was that he didn't believe in social equality of African Americans, was ready to fire anyone and hire anyone in his staff just to let him pass any decisions he wanted, and forgave most of the Southern Rebels so that reconstruction could move faster. This angered a group of politician called the Radical Republicans. The Radical meaning they have extreme views, not that their cool in terms of those raised in the 1990s.
Radical Republicans wanted to punish the South for betraying the Union and wanted them to pledge their loyalty said Union before any kind of aid could be given. They also supported the Freemen's Bearue which was made to better the lives of African Americans. For some reason, Radical Republicans didn't support women's suffrage, which in no way could make sense since they were against unfair treatment.
The Freedmen's Bearue aided the Afican Americans by providing education, skill training, churches, and jobs. But these things weren't as good as you think since the efforts for new buildings were threatened by the Klu Klux Klan, a pro white/Anti-other people group that burned, maimed, and even killed those in the African American community just for practicing their rights. They did these terrible things all while wearing white sheets that make them seem like Casper the Unfriendly ghost and/or evil sock puppets
