Objectivism - the presentation of facts, formulas and theories for the student to learn.

Behaviourism - learning is determined by the positive and negative stimuli provided to the student.
Established Learning Theories
Cognitivism - focuses on how the mind processes information rather than how it is obtained.

Constructivism - learning is constructed through how we perceive and interact in situations.

Connectivism - learning is based on how information flows. Students learn through different networks and connections.

Learning by Doing - students learn from experiencing and reflecting on individual learning opportunities.

Which theory supports
my learning online?
This method is especially effective for my learning because it helps me stay engaged with the material and promotes reflection on my performance. When I am participating in EM203's learning lessons I become excited about learning. In addition, experiential learning in EM203 is making the connections of how to apply my new skills/knowledge to real life tasks. Twitter has value in both acquiring knowledge and solving problems through connecting with others.
Learning by Doing
(Experiential Learning)
History of Experiential Learning Theory

The theory of 'learn by doing' was introduced by American philosopher John Dewey in his book, "Experience and Education" published in 1938. He advocated the importance of experimentation and reflection of the results as requirements of the learning process.
In 1984, David Kolb defined the experiential learning model. He was influenced by John Dewey, Kurt Lewis and Jean Piaget. In his view, knowledge is acquired through the process of experience. One must first 'grasp' the experience, followed by 'transforming' the experience.
What is Experiential Learning?
Kolb's model for learning is the four step process:
doing, reflecting, formulating a concept and applying it
1) The student must engage in the experience by being involved with the learning activity.
2) Reflect on what you learned through the experience. You may ask yourself what you understand and what concepts are still unclear.
3) Formulate or modify an idea based on the experience.
4) Take what you have learned and apply the lessons to different experiences.

Models of Experiential Learning
Apprenticeship - a program that allows students to gain knowledge through the mentoring of a more experienced worker.
Labs/Workshops - provides students with hands on experience of coursework through observing, performing tests and reflecting on the results.

Problem Based Learning - students are organized in groups and presented with a problem to resolve. Using their knowledge and analytical skills, they propose potential solutions to the problem through discussion. This approach can be adapted to online learning with web conferencing technology.

Case-Based Learning - allows students to solve real life scenarios by analyzing a situation and recommending a solution. It is commonly used in business, law studies and clinical medicine teaching.

Interactive Simulations - content based activities on the computer that simulate real life situations including games and role playing. It can be used to simulate actual experiences to gain real life expertise.

Give this a try?

Co-operative Education: Laurier's co-op program has given me the opportunity to gain real life work experience in the field of Accounting. I have applied my coursework in a business environment guided by accredited accounting firms. Over the years, Laurier has developed an online portal for employers and students to communicate online.
My Experience with Experiential Learning
Project Based Learning : In the BBA program, a number of my courses (ex. Accounting and Marketing) use group project learning components. This approach has helped me gain a deeper understanding of the course content and how to apply it to real business problems. I have developed better critical thinking and communication skills through learning outside of the classroom.
Online Courses: In UU150 (Community Engagement), learning activities involved interacting with members of the community and submitting reflections about the experience. I found this approach more engaging and informative than simply reading text and slide presentations.
