Definite articles are used when describing a specific noun

Examples:

1. Can you get the red book off the shelf?
2. The bakery on 6th Street has great bread.

The word the is pronounced as "th-uh" when it comes before a consonant.

Example:

A is used when describing general nouns that start with a consonant sound (ball, hat)

An is used when describing general nouns that start with a vowel sound (ice, hour)
