It was October 30, just a week before
Summative and Formative’s birthday, and the
twins couldn’t decide what they want to do for
their birthday.
Formative was counting down the days and the
entire class knew when his birthday was and
what he wanted to do. His plans were to have
his good friends Checklist, Rubric, Work
Sample, Retelling, and Anecdotal Note come to
his party.
Summative just wanted to have her best friend
Test over for the evening.

The recess bell rang, and students quickly got
dressed to go outside. Formative, as usual,
was the first one out on the playground
gathering all of his friends to play some
games.
“Hurry up checklist!” shouted Formative.
“I still have to get my jacket on and zipped up,
and put my shoes on and tie them!” replied
Checklist.

Out on the playground Formative and his
friends organized a game of soccer. Rubric
volunteered to be the referee and Retelling
went over the rules of the game.
“Play ball!!” cheered Retelling.

Meanwhile, Summative and her best friend
Test were sitting in the grass playing with
math flash cards.
“2x2 is 5,” said Summative.
“Wrong. My turn,” replied Test.

After a long day at school, the twins were happy to
get home.
Momma Assessment was becoming very anxious
about planning the twins’ birthday so she decided it
was time to sit down and talk to them about their
plans.
“Formative and Summative, what are we doing for
your birthday?” she asked.
Summative replied, “There’s only one way to have
a birthday party. We have to eat cake and open
presents. After all, it is a birthday right?”

Formative was so upset! There was so much
more to birthdays!
“Oh Momma, don’t listen to her. There needs
to be different games, lots of friends to play
with, and prizes too,” said Formative.
Clearly, the twins had two very different ideas
about how they should plan and celebrate their
birthday.
“Well, you two have to work together to plan a
party that’s fun for everyone,” Momma advised
them.
