Once upon a time, there was a hippo named Henry who lived in the Sahara Desert. He was a very lonely hippo. None of the other animals wanted to be his friend, because he did not have very good health skills. So, he set off to find some.

Chapter 1: Interpersonal Communication
Definition: How people tell each other how they feel, both out loud and through gestures.
"I" Messages
Henry was walking through the desert when he stepped on what he thought was a large rock. He heard what sounded like a loud “Ow!” Henry looked up and saw the long neck of a giraffe. He got closer and yelled up at the giraffe, “Why are you standing in the middle of my path? You are making me angry!” The giraffe then said, “Well hello little fellow. My name is Gerome."

"You might want to think about how you talk to people, or you won’t have any friends. Instead of saying that I made you angry, you could say that you are angry, because of I am standing in your path. Then, you could politely ask me to move, rather than blaming me for the whole problem.” Henry thought about this, and said, “Oh, I guess I didn’t think about that. I’m sorry. My name is Henry. Do you think we could be friends?” “I would love to be your friend!” said Gerome.
"I" Messages
As Henry and Gerome went on their way, they became good friends. Soon the friends reached the edge of a big, dark jungle. Even though they were scared, Henry and Gerome knew they had to continue their adventure. As they happily trotted through the tangled vines and weeds, it became harder and harder to make their way through. Before they knew it, they were stuck. The pair could not continue their way down the path when a large tail dangled in front of them. What could it be? Suddenly Henry noticed that the long, black tail was connected to a jungle cat, which sat above them on a tree branch.
“Uhmm, MOVE YOUR TAIL!” said Henry. “We are trying to get through!”

“You really shouldn’t be rude when you talk to someone. You should be more respectful, after all, I am Jeperkins, the jungle cat!”
Henry stared at Jeperkins in confusion. “Well, then what should I have said?” Henry asked. Jeperkins quickly responded, “You should have said, ‘Could you please move your tail, sir?”' Gerome and Henry nodded their heads in agreement. “Okay, thanks for the advice.” said Henry. “Do you want to be friends? You can come on an adventure with us.” Smiling, Jeperkins replied, “Sure thing!” Then, they were off! The three friends began a new adventure together!

The three friends walked up to a small pond, where they found an iguana crying. “What is the matter?” asked Henry. “Nothing,” said the iguana, “you won’t want to listen to my problems anyway!” Izzy the iguana began her sobbing again. “Yes I would.” said Henry. Surprised, Izzy looked up at Henry. “Really?” she asked. Henry nodded his head. Izzy began to tell Henry how she had lost her parents and that now she was scared. “It’s going to be okay.” said Henry. “Do you want to come with us for a while? We can try to help you find your parents.” Suddenly, Izzy smiled. She nodded her head. Soon, Izzy, Jeperkins, Gerome, and Henry were all close friends and they took off on an adventure.

Chapter 2: Refusal Skills
Definition: Skills to help you make good choices that will only help you in life, not harm you.
As the four friends continued their journey, they came upon the beach. They decided to go for a swim in the ocean, but when the four approached the water, they notice a large shark waiting for them in the shallows.

“Hi guys! Come on in the water. I won’t bite you...” said Sherman the shark with a tricky grimace.

Henry and his friends considered the offer, but they were scared because they knew that the shark was lying to them. “Maybe, we should just get in the water. We don’t want to be rude.” suggested Gerome. “I don’t think so.” replied Henry. “I’m not willing to take that risk.”

While the friends talked, Sherman was waiting impatiently. “So, are you getting in or not?” asked Sherman.
“Sorry, but no.” responded Henry.
“Why not!?” asked Sherman, sounding hurt. “We just don’t trust that you won’t hurt us.” said Henry. Sherman quickly got annoyed, but continued to try to get the friends to swim with him. However, they were not listening to him. Instead, they were already leaving, and did not plan to change they’re minds anytime soon. If something looks strange to you, check with someone you trust to see if it’s okay first.
