Porifera is a phylum of aquatic invertebrate that comprises with the sponge. Comprises means to be consist of; made up of
DIGESTION
-Sponges have holes on their surface called "Ostium" that water from outside the sponge is pulled through
-The water that pulled through the Ostium is then processed by cells and the cells then essentially isolate or trap that food
-They do not have a nervous, digestive or circulatory system so they rely on constant water flow to obtain food and oxygen and to remove wastes
-intracellular digestion
NUTRITION
-Sponges are omnivorous animals that obtain nutrition from the food particles in the water surrounding their habitat
-Primarily Porifera will eat bacteria and phytoplankton but a number of different sponge species are known to have a more carnivorous diet, eating small fish and crustaceans on the reefs they can also be known as "grazing carnivores"
FOOD "GETTING"
-Suspension feeders
-Consume food through "Phagocytosis" which is the ingestion of bacteria or other material by phagocytes and amoeboid protozoans
-Amoeboid protozoans are a type of cell or unicellular organism that has the ability to alter its shape
