To the Wizard. Thanks for the magic.

It was Game 5 of the 1985 National League Championship Series. The St. Louis Cardinals were playing the Los Angeles Dodgers for a chance to go to the World Series and "The Wizard" was about to create magic.

In 1985, the Cardinals shortstop was Ozzie Smith. Nicknamed "The Wizard," Smith was known for his incredible defense and speed, but not his home run power. In his career, Smith recorded just 28 home runs in over 2500 games.

The Cardinals started off Game 5 well, scoring two runs in the first inning.

The Dodgers followed this up with two runs in the fourth inning to tie the game.

Game 5 of the 1985 NLCS was a tight, low scoring match up and the score was tied going into the bottom of the ninth.

Ozzie Smith was set to hit second in the bottom of the ninth inning. With no one on when he stepped up to bat, his job was to simply get on base. No one was expecting home run heroics.

Furthermore, home run heroics really weren't expected as Ozzie Smith had never hit a home run left handed. When Smith came to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, he was going to hit left handed.

Despite all this, Smith stepped into the batters box and the improbable happened.
