When Hester's public humiliation was over, she was visited by a doctor. The doctor was her husband and he doesn't want his identity to be known.

Hester was released from prison. Hester moved into a small cottage on the outskirts of the town where she makes needle work.




Hester names her baby Pearl. Hester is worried that Pearl is going to be an outcast, but Pearl is charming and pretty.

Hester went to the governor's office to deliver a pair of gloves. Hester didn't go just to deliver the gloves, she wanted to see if she was going to be able to keep Pearl.

Governor Bellingham, John Wilson, Arthur Dimmesdale, and Roger Chillingworth are talking if Hester should be able to keep Pearl. Hester is hiding in the corner overhearing their conversation. She jumps out when she hears that she shouldn't be able to keep Pearl. They eventually let her keep Pearl under an agreement.


Rev. Dimmesdale looks sick, but he doesn't want to have an appointment. He eventually lets Roger examine him.

Rev. Dimmesdale and Roger were talking. Roger wanted to know who the father of Pearl was and Rev. Dimmesdale said he didn't know. Roger continues to ask him personal questions.



Rev. Dimmesdale has been feeling very guilty after Chillingworth has been trying to get revenge on him. The more Dimmesdale tries to confess his guilt during his sermons, the more holy his followers believe he is.

Rev. Dimmesdale went to the scaffold were Hester had her public humiliation. He went at night and the only people that showed up were Governor Bellingham and his sister. Hester and Pearl showed up later and joined him on the scaffold.

It's been seven years since Pearl was born and people's views of Hester are different now. People say she is hardworking because she helps the poor get food and attend the sick.

Roger wants to talk to Hester about her letter "A" and Hester doesn't want Pearl to hear about it, so she tells Pearl to go play in the water. While Pearl is playing in the water, Roger tells Hester that she is able to take off her scarlet letter now. Hester wants to keep it on to remind her of her sin.
