The Life of Harriet Jacobs
based on a true story
By Melissa Jauregui, Catherine Colomer, Ayva Martinez, and
Jaidyn Mackaben

The beautiful spring came; and when Nature resumes her loveliness, the human soul is apt to revive also.
-Harriet Jacobs
There was a little girl by the name of Harriet Jacobs. She was an African-American girl who lived a simple life; but by the age of six, she realized everything would change.

After Harriet's mother passed away, she lived with her mother's kind mistress. She taught Harriet how to read, write, and sew which was forbidden in her situation because Harriet was a slave.

Harriet became very good with the skills she learned from the mistress despite it being forbidden. She kept them secret from most people and never let anyone discourage her from using her talents.

But not long after, the loving mistress also passed away, so Harriet was passed onto the mistress's niece who was only three.

But since the late mistress's niece was so young, Harriet's actual master was the niece's father, Dr. James Norcom. He was a terrible man who wished to hurt Harriet and never let her leave his house.

By the time Harriet was 15, not much had changed between her and her master. So she decided to rebel against that terrible man and had a relationship as well as two children with a white man.
