Ron was a twelve year old with red hair, green eyes, and was
right-handed. He liked animals. One day Ron was walking to
school and he saw a lot of stray dogs and cats. Ron thought
about all the animals that need homes. The next day was
Saturday, and Ron went to visit his great uncle who lost his
wife, Ron's aunt, a year ago. Ron found his uncle sitting on
the couch watching TV. Ron's uncle told him that he doesn't
have much to do at home. Ron remembered all the strays
that he saw outside who didn't have anyone to take care of
them. Ron said, "Uncle Marvin, would you like to have a pet
to keep you company and give you something to do?" Uncle
Marvin scratched his beard and answered, "Yes, I think I
might like that very much. A dog would be nice. Do you know
where I could get one?"

Ron said, "I have an idea, but I need some time. Give me a
month, and I will find a dog for you." Uncle Marvin smiled and
said, "Thanks, Ron. That would make me very happy and give
me an excuse to leave the house."
The next day Ron went to see his friend Nick whose father Dr.
Cohen was a veterinarian. Nick had black hair, brown eyes, one
dimple in his left cheek, and was left-handed. Ron asked Nick if
he'd like to join him on a project. "You see, Nick, I have this
great idea, to give stray animals a home with lonely old people,
like my great uncle Marvin. I saw him yesterday, and he said
he'd like to have a dog. Nick, do you think your Dad could check
the dogs and cats that we want to bring to the old people?" "No
problem," said Nick, "Let's go ask him now." The boys went to
look for Nick's dad, Mickey Cohen. Dr. Cohen agreed to check
and inoculate all the dogs and cats!

Nick said, "Let's ask our neighbor old Mrs. Simpson if she wants a
cat or dog." "Great idea! Let's go now!" said Ron excitedly. The
boys crossed the road and knocked on the door to Mrs. Simpson's
house. Nothing happened. "Maybe she's not home," said Ron.
"Nah, she just moves very slowly. I see the light on inside." Finally
the door opened and a gray-haired short old lady asked, "What do
you want, kiddies?" in a tired voice. "Hi, Mrs. Simpson. I'm Nick
Cohen from across the street, and this is my friend Ron. We're
looking for people to take care of cats and dogs who don't have
homes. Would you like to take in a homeless cat?" "Oh yes,"
answered Mrs. Simpson, "I used to have a cat, but he was hit by a
bus. I would love to get another cat, but he must be inoculated, of
course." "Not to worry, Mrs. Simpson, my dad will take care of
that. He's a vet," explained Nick. "You kids are so thoughtful. I'll
tell all my friends," said Mrs. Simpson. Nick and Ron said goodbye
and returned to Nick's house to plan the project which they decided
to call Furry Friends.

Nick and Ron made a list of what they would need for
"Furry Friends." Then they printed fliers asking for
donations of animal cages, blankets, pet toys, collars,
leashes and other things. They posted the fliers in
supermarkets, on trees and in apartment buildings. Nick
suggested going to pet stores to see if they had
equipment to give away. The first week they were able
to collect 15 cages, 3 bags of dog food, 4 bowls, 5
blankets, 1 dog and 1 cat. The next week Dr. Cohen
checked the animals, gave them shots and pills, so the
week after the animal were ready to go to their new
owners. Mrs. Simpson and Uncle Marvin were very
happy to meet their furry friends. Mrs. Simpson called
her new cat Fluffy because he had long hair. Uncle
Marvin called his dog Lucky because she was lucky to
have a home.

Before they brought the dog and cat to their new
owners, they prepared and put up fliers. On the fliers
they wrote that any person living in an old aged home
or senior center who wanted to own a pet could contact
them at 123 4567 910.
