
Prudence Crandle was born on September 3, 1803 in Hopkinton, RI. She was born into a Quaker family.


Being raised in a Quaker family, Prudence valued peace and tolerance towards others. This would come into play later in life.

Quaker Beleifs were to be kind and accepting towards others. this helped Prudence later in life.

Prudence was educated at The New England Friends' Boarding school in Providence, RI.

She later moved to Conneticut to start a private school for girls.
Prudence's school was the best in the state and many people wanted to be in it.


She admitted an African American girl into her school in 1833. The surrounding people were furious and started rioting.

The people threatened to remove their children, and they did. she did not care she got more African American from the surrounding states to join her school.
