Husband and lawyer:
Mandela married Evelyn Mase, and they had some children. He
had problems with his wife, because she didn't like politics, and he
can't be much time at home.
In 1950 the government took some black's territories. In 1951
Mandela wanted to change some laws,but the government didn't
listen to him. He made more protests with no violence.
The day of protest:
After the protest, the government was angry, and the police
arrested him and many other protesters, for two days. He opened
a new law office for blacks. The government was angry, so they
banned him for meetings with the ANC people.
Arrests:
The police went to Mandela's house and searched for
documents. They arrested him in front of his family. That day the
police arrested 144 more people. All the people over the country
protested, and the world too. His wife left him, when he was in
prision.



















Protest the Pass Laws!:
In 1960, 30.000 people protested with the PAC. The
police killed 2 men, and hurt 400 women and children.
Chief Luthuli started a fire in the street and, burned his
passbook. Then thousands of blacks did the same. The
government made a new law: nobody could protest.
Mandela and fourty more protesters were arested for 36
hours. He got out for his trial.
Ban the ANC! :
On 1960 the government banned the ANC and the PAC.

Free them! :
After five years the treason trial ended. Mandela left the
prision. A free man!





The ANC was very dangerous now, so Madela started a new life. The
newspapers called him the "Black pimpernel". He drove across the
country, and talked to many people about the ANC work.
They had to use violence, so Mandela started a new organization, the MK.
The ANC wanted Mandela for importanat meetings. Winnie, his wife, was
afraid, but she understood. He had more meetings in many places. He
went to London, and he felt so happy
Freedomends in Rivonia:
In 1962 the police caught Mandela in Rivonia. The people protested and
shouted "Free Mandela". His trial started and was found guilty. He got 5
years in prision.
Boy or man?:
In prision the autorities gave short trousers to black people. He protested,
so they gave him long trousers.
In 1963 Mandela went to Robben Island. He had to work very hard. Then
the police found MK´s papers, with plans for violence.
The Rivonia trial:
The Rivonia trial started in October of 1963. In London the people
protested. On June of 1964, the trial ended, with life in prision for Nelson
Mandela and many other men.




Robben Island:
The prision rooms were small, wet and cold. The work was very hard
and boring. The prisioners could write only one letter to their families
every six months, and only 500 words in each letter. But the system of
shipment was very bad.
Prision authorities wanted the prisioners to felt weak, so the stronger men
had to help the weaker men.
Visitors:
In the first months, there were some visitors. A photographer and a
writer from a newspaper arrived one day. Then, a lawyer arrived from
Britain and the United States. The world was interested in the Rivonia trial
prisioners.
Winnie visited him, five warders were watching them. They had to speak
English or Afrikaans.
They had thirty minutes to talk, and Mandela did not see her again for two
years.
The Iternational Red Cross wanted to help them.






Prision life:
Some prisioners wanted to study. Mandela used books from the London
University. The prisioners couldn´t have newspapers, but the warders
carried them sandwiches inside newpapers. But one day, a warder saw
MAndela, and he was 3 days without eating, and he dindn´t see any
prisioners.
Family:
In the spring of 1968, his mother visited him, later, she died. In 1969,
his son, Thembi, died in a car accident.
Changes to prision life:
In 1977 the authhorities said: "Political prisioners donn´t have to
work". So Mandela started a garden. He gave the vegetables to the
prision's cook. He enjoyed his garden. He also read lot of books, and
played tennis. In 1980 the prisioners could read newspapers. He read:
"Free Mandela!"
In 1982, the authorities moved Mandela, and three other men to
another prision.




PollsmoorPrision:
The life in Pollsmoor was better. For the first time in twenty-one
years Mandela took Winnie in his arms. In 1985 the president Botha
said "mandela can be free , but the ANC had to stop using
violence". Mandela said that the ANC couldn't stop to use violence
because the government used it..
Victor Verster:
On 1988 they moved Mandela to Victor Verster. The president
Botha left the government in 1989. F. W. Klerk was the new
president. Klerk freed some Mandela's friends.
The long walk to freedom:
The government wanted to send Mandela to Jhohannesburg and
free him there. On 11 February 1990 Mandela walked out of Victor
Vrster after more than 10.000 days in prision.
