I dedicate this book to my friend Lizbeth.

Once upon a time in a city named Newcastle, it is always dark because of pollution in the air.
Pollution: When something is added to the environment that is harmful to living things.

This pollution is being caused by factories and cars.
These factories are releasing chemicals by burning fossil fuels.
Fossil Fuel Examples: Coal, oil, and natural gas.

The chemicals go into the air and create villains like Mr.Acid Rain.

Mr.Acid Rain rains down on Newcastle all the time.

Mr.Acid Rain is turning Newcastle into a place no one can live in.

The soil can no longer help plants live.
The water is now toxic, and people are unable to drink it.
Toxic: Harmful to living things.

Not only are people unable to drink the water, but fish are dying.

The people of Newcastle became tired of dealing with Mr.Acid Rain.

They decided it was time for them to take action.

In order to stop Mr.Acid Rain, the people of Newcastle began riding bikes.

Those who didn't ride bikes started riding the bus.

They also started making sure they turned off the lights when they left the room.

Some of the people even changed how they got their electricity.

The people of Newcastle went from getting their electricity from burning fossil fuels to using solar power.
Solar Power:Using energy from the sun for electricity.

Riding bikes and taking the bus helps because makes the number of chemicals in the air smaller.
Reduce: Make smaller

Making sure to turn off the lights when you are done helps because it uses less electricity.

Using solar power energy helps because fossil fuels aren't being burned to make electricity.

After a while of doing this, the people of Newcastle started to notice a difference.
